Mint Expands Into Financial Planning Tools

Mint announced a new feature called Mint Goals, intended to help users determine a plan for reaching their specific long-term goals and track their progress in achieving them. With the new service, Mint is seeking to play a role in planning for the future and not just tracking the past. The site will then provide the user with a checklist of information and steps to take (like how much to put away each month) to reach that particular goal and an estimate for how long it will take to reach the goal.

Mint has recently integrated the new Get Satisfaction customer community, which gives users a platform to interact with each other and with the Mint.com product team. With the Mint.com user base approaching 2 million people, plus the new users from Quicken Online and TurboTax who arrived because the recent Intuit acquisition.

The folks at Mint, which are now part of Intuit, were very receptive and said that an app for the Android OS is in the works, with a prototype being tested internally. The company is also working on a tool that would allow manual entry of transactions, instead of waiting for the bank to record it, upload it to its site and then allow Mint to pull it in. The Mint team is also working on a way to allow users to track and record the cash spent after it was withdrawn from the ATM

Mint has released data showing that consumer spending is up across key shopping categories. Based on aggregate spending trends from its 1.8 million users, Mint says retail buying is enjoying a major rebound in the last few months, after 2009 lagged behind last year’s figures for most of the year. The most recent findings for November show healthy gains in spending in segments including general merchandise, clothing and electronics. Among major retailers, for example, Intuit-owned Mint found a 12.6% increase in spending per user at Sears, an 8.5% rise at J. Crew and an 18.3% jump at Best Buy. Upscale stores like Nordstrom, Banana Republic and Saks Fifth Avenue have also seen a steady climb in sales after suffering through much of a dismal 2009.

Intuit completes buyout of Mint.com

Intuit said it completed its purchase of the Web site Mint.com. With closing of $170 million deal, which was announced in September, Aaron Patzer will shift from CEO of Mint.com to vice president and general manager of Intuit’s personal finance group, which also includes Quicken products. Intuit said it will keep both brand names. Quicken products will still be sold, and Mint.com will remain a free Web site, but the company also plans to integrate the two lines to offer new services.

Mint launches app for Yahoo homepage

Mint on released Budget, an updated version of its application for the new Yahoo Inc. homepage. The Mountain View-based company said the app focuses on things people use most on Mint.com: Budgets, spending and alerts, and it is designed it to work on Sunnyvale-based Yahoo homepages.

Citigroup has formed a venture with Microsoft Corp. to compete with Mint.com, the personal- finance Web site that Intuit Inc. agreed to buy last week for $170 million, people familiar with the matter said. Citigroup and Microsoft have spent about $5 million on the project since it was started earlier this year, one of the people said. The venture, tentatively named Bundle, is led by Jaidev Shergill, an executive vice president at Citigroup’s Growth Ventures and Innovation unit, its in-house incubator of start-up businesses. Like Mint, the venture would let users monitor accounts at multiple banks and brokerages.

Intuit agreed to buy personal-finance site Mint.com for $170 million, adding to the tax and financial-management company’s offerings in the burgeoning business of providing software as a service. Though Intuit’s revenue growth slowed in the fiscal year ended July 31, the company continued to rack up gains in the part of its business that allows consumers to file taxes online while its older business of selling software in stores shrank. Intuit plans to keep products from its key Quicken Online franchise and Mint.com, with each serving “separate and equally important” functions. Mint.com will become the online personal financial management service Intuit offers directly to consumers, while Quicken Online will connect customers across desktop, online and mobile platforms.

Mint is moving into retirement savings and adding richer analytics to track your net worth as part of a push into higher-ticket items and long-term financial goals. Launched two years ago, the Mountain View-based company started as a place to sync your bank accounts and watch credit card spending. Since then, it’s attracted 1.4 million users, added mortgage and investment tracking and raised $31 million in funding in three rounds. That includes a $14 million Series C-round last week.
